modestify-lengthen short dresses DIY

when i'm shopping, i see many dresses that are really cute and think, "if only it was a little longer, i'd totally buy this dress!"  especially since short dresses are in style these days.  so what i do is buy them anyway and modestify-lengthen the dresses longer.

before pictures of the 3 dresses i modestified.

use code: Sarah20 for 20% off!  valid until april 30th.

for the two black dresses i used this tutorial, and with the beige dress, instead of picking the seams of the bottom of the skirt, i just added the contrast fabric on the bottom and sewed it along the already-there seams of the skirt, then double folded the bottom part of the contrast fabric.  i also tailored the waist so it was more fitted and made the long sleeves into short sleeves.

for me the black dresses are the easiest to lengthen out since finding a similar fabric to the dress is not that difficult since matching black to a black isn't that hard, but with dresses like the beige dress above, it's more difficult to find a matching fabric so unless you find a fabric of the same color, it might look tacky.  you don't want the extra fabric to be noticeable if it doesn't match, so the best option is to add a contrast color that compliments the color of the dress and add it on, making it look like it was originally made that way.

project budget: very low(mine was $1-2 per dress)
estimated time: 20 mins.
level: beginner

the weather has been crazy here lately.  it was so warm and nice for an entire week, making us think that maybe spring was here to stay but then it snowed a ton on saturday and sunday!  utah, it's almost april already, just be done with winter already!

p.s. last week i realized i'm behind over 20 posts here on the blog.  so you don't mind me posting everyday for the next couple of weeks, do you? :)

ariana's snow white birthday party.

ariana wanted a snow white birthday party because her favorite disney princess is snow white.  all the girls were invited to wear a princess dress and upon arrival, they each received a basket with a red bow headband.  each girl got to put on some princess make-up with pink lipstick, pink sparkly eye shadow, and pink blush.  then we ate "dwarf foods" which was all mini finger foods(for easy eating) of meat balls, sweet potato fries in a cone, pigs in a blanket, cheesecake bites, rainbow fruit kabobs, veggies in a cup with ranch, pie-cupcakes, and lemonade.  i planned on making these candied apples but i completely forgot!  then we made caramel apples and the girls helped unwrap the caramels which they loved, and got to decorate it with m&m's and a variety of sprinkles.  then we played pop goes the apple where they got to pop the balloons with a toothpick and candy was inside the balloons.  then ariana opened her presents(she told me opening presents was her favorite part, she hugged or kissed every present she got).  each girl left the party with a basket full of candies, caramel apples, and a red headband.

*special thanks to my husband and my awesome friend rachel and her sister noel for helping out so much!  the party would not have started on time if it wasn't for you.

ariana's birth day.

on ariana's birthday i told her we could do whatever she wished.  so she opened presents, got a cookies & cream lollipop, went shopping and picked out a dress, went to the aquarium, ate a fish burrito, took a nap(not her wish but it wasn't optional ;), went to her friend's b-day party, and she got to blow out the candles over and over and over again.

p.s.  the second to last picture just kills me.  jay was in the bouncy thing making sure our girls weren't getting dominated by older kids but i had to tell him to get off because he was probably scaring all the moms with his pedophile mustache!(yes, i openly call it the "pedophile mustache" in hopes that he'll shave it off) and how all the moms were probably very nervously watching their kids as i spoke.  but instead of getting off, jay kept looking around with his "pedophile" smile.  oh, those poor moms.
